Lost in the Land

Driving down from Georgia to see my mom and dad
Headed south to Florida; a place I knew so well
but the closer I got, the more confused I became
Roads I didn’t recognize, big bridges, endless lanes
Traffic backed up on the turnpike, bumper to bumper crawl
Toll fees sent straight to my phone - no booths anymore
back in ‘86, my wife and I drove that same stretch
Open road for miles, not a single car in sight

Was I lost in the land, or in the land of the lost?
Where’s the Florida of years gone by?
Groves and cattle farms as far as the eye could see
Dairy farms and horse ranches scattering the countryside
Where you felt at home with the gators and the snakes
Where has it all gone, or was I in a dream?

Got off the turnpike at Jupiter, home of Burt Reynolds’ fame
Traffic backed up for miles, fancy cars in every lane
Big buildings everywhere, more stores than I could count
Motorhomes towing trucks worth more than my whole house
People dressed to kill, diamonds flashing in the sun
No cowboy boots, no belt buckles, no faded jeans like before
My old ‘96 Dodge van had me feeling out of place
Like the Beverly Hillbillies rolling into town

Was I lost in the land, or in the land of the lost?
Where’s the Florida of years gone by?
No friendly faces, quiet roads, and scattered beaches
Just a faded day locked in my memories’ far reaches
Where you felt at home with the gators and the snakes
Where has it all gone, or was I in a dream?
All that was missing was Cha-ka and the Sleestaks

Arrived in Delray and what did I see?
One block of homes worth more than my whole town back home
Million-dollar mansions stretching far as the eye could see
Where were the days of skiing Lake Ida; jumping gators free?
Bass fishing till dusk, dodging cottonmouths in the trees
Driving my boat ‘55 down the canals, no houses in sight
Has everyone forgot what life is really about?
Or was it me who got left behind in time?

Was I lost in the land, or in the land of the lost?
Where’s the Florida of years gone by?
Was I lost in time, in cities paved with the devil’s spit?
Where money and what you own mean more than your soul
No room to breathe with all the concrete in the way
Fancy cars and asphalt stretching far as you can see
Where has it all gone, or was I in a dream?

Yeah…where has it all gone?
Those empty turnpike miles with her hand on mine
Groves whispering in the wind, no sirens, no signs,
Just us and the road and the promise of tomorrow
Now the sun sets on concrete, and the quiet’s borrowed
Was I lost in the land, or just lost without you?
In the land of the lost….chasing ghosts we once knew
maybe the old Florida’s still out there somewhere
Hiding in the memories, waiting in the air
or maybe it’s gone for good, like so many things
but I carry it with me, on these worn-out dreams
Was I lost in the land…or in the land of the lost?
Lord, show me the way home.
Where the gators still watch, and the old roads don’t cost.
Yeah, where has it all gone?
